A very early
and unusual bar action Sidelock non ejector hammer gun with the
Jones rotary under-lever mechanism carrying the Gibbs patent. Highly
decorative engraved action with rose and scroll, carrying the makers
name W. R. Leeson forward of the hammers.
30" Damascus
barrels with flat rib, engraved W. R. Leeson George St, Ashford.
Chambered for 2¾" cartridges. Each barrel is choked improved.
Interesting
action and barrel configuration, note the absence of "barrel flats".
The original London proof marks are stamped forward of the chamber
area and carry the "Not for Ball" proof stampings, these marks were
used in the proof period 1875 - 1887. From research, it is known
that the George Street address was used from 1876 until around 1880
when the address changed to Bank Street. The serial number of 16350
indicates an early made gun, this number may have been the makers
original numbering system before W. R. Leeson adopted his own
numbering sequence. From these pieces of information we can deduce
the gun would have been made around 1876 - 1878.
Straight
hand well figured English stock measuring 14¼" with gold
inlaid escutcheon. The stocks butt end is finished with its original
engraved heel and toes plates.
Weight 6lb.
15⅝ oz.
The gun is housed in a canvas
carry case with both the makers suggested "loading charges" and also
a later Ashford & Maddox Street, London trade label (this could have
been attached during a later servicing period of the gun).
